Emily Durso graduated with the first class of women in the College in 1973. She is a native Washingtonian who first owned a book store in Georgetown then moved on to work on the first elected DC City Council in 1977. Afterward she continued in DC Government as Assistant Director of Economic Development and Director of the Committee to Promote DC through 1985. Leaving government Ms. Durso became the Director of Marketing for the then largest commercial mixed use development project in DC opening a hotel, office building, retail and museum complex. She then ran the Hotel Association of Washington for 20 years counting the development and opening of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, the creation of the marketing arm of DC, DESTINATION DC and the opening of the first Charter High in Washington as her lead projects.

As President of the HAWDC Ms. Durso also handled all lobbying, labor relations and public affairs for the DC hotel industry. In 2010 Ms. Durso moved back into DC Government this time in the field of education and workforce development serving as Acting Superintendent of Education for DC and Chief of College and Career for DC Public Schools. At this time Ms. Durso is providing consultant services to several well known Foundations in their efforts to better prepare first generation students for success in college and career.
