Monica Lijewski, Financial Manager
at Open Circle Theater
DATE: Sunday, April 9
LOCATION: Local Restaurant (location given to student RSVPs)
Monica Lijewski is a 1985 graduate of the College whose career took many surprising turns. Monica started her university career as an Engineering major at Case Western Reserve University, but she quickly learned that the classes in which she took most pleasure were in the humanities. She transferred to GU in 1982 and graduated with a degree in English and a minor in Computer Science. Immediately after graduation, she worked as a bank teller, moonlighting as an actor and a pizza delivery driver. She delivered pizza to the White House back in the days when one could drive right down Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the people’s house.
Eventually she became a Staff Accountant in a CPA firm, all the while remaining active in professional theatre. She became a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association in 1999, and has worked at the Kennedy Center, Ford’s Theater, Olney Theatre Center and others. She sustained a devastating spinal cord injury in 2011, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down, but manages to live alone in an accessible condo in Fairfax, Virginia. She returned to the stage in October, 2016 in Open Circle Theatre’s production of “The Who’s Tommy,” and volunteers as the theatre company’s Financial Manager, also helping to find grant opportunities and writing grant proposals.
